🏰 Bankless Locations #5: Castle Ethereum
Castle Ethereum’s sturdy walls provide safety to all who dwell within. Ethereans pride themselves on decentralization and ultrasound security, even if it is sometimes costly. They also enjoy a good celebration, as excitement over The Merge bubbles over. Bull or bear market, they continue building, one money lego brick at a time.
After a year of helping us build BanklessDAO culture, perchy’s brilliance is becoming known throughout the cryptoverse. Half of the 300 editions are already in the hands of loyal fans, so be sure to mint yours ASAP! All unsold editions will be burned after minting ends on June 3, 2022.
🗞 Mint a Newsie
That’s right: Newsies are minting! Help support the good work being done at Good Morning News, the Writers Guild, and BanklessDAO. These profile pics are minting at .04 ETH until Monday, when the price goes to .06 ETH, and 10% of each mint goes to the Writers Guild multisig and 10% to the bDAO Treasury. Having never received funding from BanklessDAO, this is a new type of retroactive funding!!
💸 Arrakis Uniswap LP
So much can be done with your BANK instead of leaving it dormant in your wallet. Built on Uniswap V3, the Arrakis pool is ready for a swim. When you provide liquidity, you earn passive income through trading fees. In addition to that, you earn 30% APY. So hurry up and put your BANK to work!

Permission to Vibe
Authors: Jake and Stake and tomahawk
Billed as the cultural event of the year, the Permissionless conference was THE place to be for Web3 builders last week. For our frens Jake and tomahawk, it didn’t disappoint …
Stepping out of the cool comfort of the airport into the tropical climate of South Florida was like being slapped in the face with a wet noodle. The packed Palm Beach County Conference Center seemed almost as steamy at times, but kudos to Blockworks for the planning and execution — they put together a seamless experience.
Many of us digital natives lean to the introverted side, so being anon in the DAO has been a natural place to build and thrive. Heading to the conference, some of us were a bit nervous to meet everyone, since no one had seen our faces and we didn’t really know what to expect. Our trepidation was extremely short lived.
Permissionless was like a crypto candy shop for DeFi nerds. Free merch filled the expo floor, and the panels with big-time founders were enough to get any Web3 fan excited. But for those of us in bDAO, it was also a chance for long-time contributors who hadn’t met in person to connect IRL for the first time, to really cement our existing digital bonds and finally put faces to handles. The ability to do just that made this experience one of a lifetime, and so productive for the DAO at large.
It never got old — seeing the reactions when a DAO member introduced themselves by their Discord name, which was often followed by a “OMG, I’m so-and-so!” and an instant bear hug as they each realized who the other was. This happened pretty consistently over the first few days and completely set the tone. There was no ice to be broken, just insta-good vibes all around. People’s plans for the week quickly aligned: we were there to hang out and create memories, first and foremost.
When the BanklessDAO fam was together, it was like we were brothers, sisters, and Chippi in arms. The energy was absolutely palpable. Ideas could be shared and iterated on at a lightning pace. The smiles and body language amplified all the feedback as we all got a chance to absorb each other's thoughts and reactions. It definitely hits different when you're able to see each other and share space. You get a deeper sense of who people are and what they're feeling, in a way that's not possible via voice chats. It was like seeing old friends for the first time.
Still, we often referred to each other as our Discord handles while we shared alpha and ideas. It just felt right.
There were a wide variety of interesting talks, but we got the sense that there were more investors than builders at Permissionless. Most of the panel discussions in the main auditorium were fairly intro level, especially if you have been in the space for a few years or have a good working knowledge of Ethereum. However, a few ventured into new and exciting territory; some of our personal favorite panels were:
Why You Can't Afford to Ignore MEV (Hasu and Stephane Gosselin)
Web3 Social Media — Can Crypto Improve Our Social Lives? (Evin McMullen, Christine Beltramini, and David Hoffman)
Why DAOs Win (Ben Strack, Julia Rosenberg, Kevin Owocki, Hart Lambur, and frogmonkee)
Play and Earn Gaming (Kieran Warwick, Jeff Zirlin, Sarah Buxton, Kelvin Koh)
DeFi 2.0: The Next Generation of Financial Primitives (Alan Chiu, Ray Mogg, Carson Cook, Vance Spencer, EJ Rogers)
In general, we found when picking panels to attend, it is better to read the bios rather than the session titles. Look for interesting people and moderators. The sessions we enjoyed most were the ones with the builders we found the most interesting, not necessarily the ones with the most catchy title.
But to be completely honest, we probably all spent far less time going to talks than we did talking to each other. We knew we could catch the recordings of panel talks any time, but there were only a precious handful of opportunities to connect with the amazing people we’d been working with for the last year. Nothing expressed this sentiment better than the fact that BanklessDAO held two beach days. On Tuesday and Thursday, many of us spent the afternoon sizzling on West Palm Beach or in the refreshing Atlantic, getting our tans on — or burns… (hope you’ve recovered, AboveAverageJoe) — with a drink or frisbee in hand.
Some observers pointed out the stark dichotomy of attendees at Permissionless. You could pretty much tell right away who the builders and DAO members were versus the “crypto bros”, traders, and corporate types. You could see it in the after-parties and bar crawls as well — the two groups self-segregated quite naturally and it was easy to tell when you had wandered too deeply into quick-money degen territory. If anyone asked you what company you were with, it was time to look around and maybe wander back to the real party.
The Bankless brand clearly attracts a certain kind of person. We are all here because we resonate with these powerful ideas: self-sovereignty, trustlessness, equitable progress and access in finance, public goods, solving coordination failures, and great memes. This made our discussions at Permissionless start at such a deep level of mutual understanding that fascinating conversation was simply the norm, rather than the exception.
Other similarities and shared interests jumped out as well, showing us all that we had even more in common than we ever realized. BanklessDAO members are fans of nature (many are climbers, hikers, skiers, and paddlers). Many of us are into the performing arts, whether in the past or still at present. A lot of bDAO frens have a spiritual bent. There were yoga sessions (and at least one live tarot reading) kindly led by our generous fren nonsensetwice (who is as punk rock as they come — a true original). We all are repulsed by war, have a strong connection to our fellow humans, and a shared desire to build a better world for the future. We come from all walks of life and yet gravitate to similar interests and themes, for they are the marks of our time, the really important stuff.
Seeing all the activity and energy has made us more bullish than ever. The Bankless brand is powerful; we have a very advantageous position by our association with the HQ founders, who’ve achieved crypto rock star status at this point. It seemed that every single project represented there either knew of us or wanted to collab or, in the extreme cases, pitched our members incessantly (maybe because they thought we were with HQ haha). People were hyped. There was surprisingly little indication that we are in a full-blown bear market. All of the big projects are full speed ahead, building their way out of the bear, not slowing a bit.
Sharing what we’re working on helped us all to understand other projects better and to see more opportunities for synergy. The DAO is incredibly siloed into its guilds and projects, and teams often aren’t aware that there are resources just one connection away, if the right person is asked. Permissionless was a space that allowed such connections to be easily found, and obstacles which were in place for weeks or months started evaporating (was it the heat?). The party conversations led to quite a bit of actual work getting done! (Case in point: At the exclusive Optimism + Bankless party, Icedcool found the right guy at Tokemak and laid some groundwork for getting a permissionless BANK reactor launched on their protocol, something treasury has been working on for a while!)
In retrospect it’s actually hard to overstate the benefit of these IRL meetups. We recruited new DAO members just because they were awesome people! We found folks who had the great ideas our projects needed and found new ways to overcome hurdles. The silos connected, and we learned more about the fantastic building we are all doing. Our hearts are still full from all the gratitude, generosity, and warm exchanges from our good frens.
The vibes at Permissionless were simply phenomenal, but this is due in large part to the people who attended. Namely, the BanklessDAO family. We already can’t wait for the next big conference (NFT.NYC anyone?). Which ones can you attend, anon?

Staying Safe on Telegram
Last week BanklessDAO had a strong presence at the inaugural Permissionless conference. This was the first event where a critical mass of bDAO members got to meet each other IRL. A big factor for us to connect as deeply as we did was our early adoption of Telegram as the communication tool for coordination.
Because of this success we will continue using Telegram during future IRL events. But as with any type of communication tool we need to exercise some vigilance so that we can continue vibing without nasty surprises.
Before you follow BanklessDAO on Telegram, here are some Telegram-specific operational security tips. Much of the advice from our past Phishing School columns on Discord security applies here as well.
Are My Messages Encrypted?
Cloud chats, including public groups and channels, are not end-to-end encrypted and are stored on Telegram's servers (but are stored encrypted using Telegram's private keys). This means that the Telegram team can hypothetically access your messages and media, although they do make assurances that this would be difficult.
Secret chats are end-to-end encrypted with private keys that only the chatting users have access to and the chats are not stored on Telegram's servers. Secret chats have to be explicitly created and are not the “default” setting for new chats.
Configuring Telegram
After you set up your Telegram account you should go through all the options available on the Settings page and tune them so that the application is working to your expectations. Namely the options under Privacy and Security:
Password & Biometrics and Two-Step Verification: If you believe you are a likely target for phone theft or seizure, consider enabling these settings to reduce the likelihood that your Telegram data gets compromised.
Privacy: I recommend choosing Nobody for all these settings, then selectively changing each setting to My Contacts or Everybody depending on the “need to know basis” of that information, where My Contacts can be a safe option if you can vouch for the people you have added to your phone's contact list. For example, it’s pretty innocuous to let Everybody see your Profile Photo and help others recognize your messages. But you may want to disable allowing Everybody to find you by your phone number, especially if your phone number may have been in a data breach such as the Ledger/Shopify data breach dump.
Some other particulars about Telegram to consider:
You can associate a Telegram account with a VOIP number. So if you use services like MySudo or Twilio, you can create a one-off phone number just for Telegram use.
There are various settings for sharing your location. There have been cases of location services being abused to locate users, so I recommend disabling location access to Telegram and selectively sharing your location using your phone's native Maps app whenever the need arises.
Beware of Social Engineering
Telegram provides a robust API that can unfortunately be used by malicious actors to automate social engineering attacks. So exercise the same caution about unknown private messages on Telegram as you would with direct messages on Discord:
If someone messages you claiming to be someone, verify their identity. Are they trying to mimic another user through clever typos in their username? If they are a user in BanklessDAO or another organization you both are a part of, ask them to message you on Discord to verify that the Telegram user is the same person.
Customer support scams are very rampant on Telegram, so be careful about such messages if you ask questions or look for support in popular public channels.
Assume any public channel, even one that's supposedly just composed of your frens, may have lurkers that are looking for opportunities to abuse their access to your chat. Be careful about what you share, especially if it may dox someone or lead to consequences in the future (consider deleting old media from the chat if its usefulness has passed).

Snapshot Proposals
🌈 VitaDAO <> BanklessDAO Token Swap
BanklessDAO is seeking to build relationships with other DAOs and Web3 organizations to:
diversify its treasury holdings to help the DAO’s long-term operational viability.
introduce the tools and services developed by bDAO to Web3 communities.
raise awareness of bDAO in different communities.
VitaDAO is a community-owned collective funding early-stage longevity research, governed through the VitaDAO Snapshot. A token swap with VitaDAO will not only diversify bDAO’s treasury but also help initiate the partnership with VitaDAO, which can provide further opportunities for promoting bDAO’s products and services.
