BanklessDAO Weekly NFT and Cryptoart Newsletter
Dear Bankless Nation,🏴
We have entered the month leading up to NFT NYC, which promises to be bigger and even more astonishing than the 2021 event. We can't wait to follow this year's events and presentations and find out what the coming months have in store for us.
In this edition, we discuss big names–with DC Comics and Snoop Dog at the top–and the various related NFT projects that grow and build relentlessly, regardless of the trend of the crypto market. This is good for us all!
In addition, we focus on an NFT gaming project with a community of over 200K members, and a concept so interesting and engaging that it caused heavy traffic congestion on its debut..
Welcome to Decentralized Arts.

DC Comics Launch Own NFT Marketplace
One of the most popular and influential comic publishing companies, DC Comics, has just launched an NFT marketplace that is now live in beta. For almost a century, DC Comics has helped shape the entertainment industry with characters such as Batman, Superman, Watchmen, and Aquaman and now they are jumping onto the blockchain with NFTs using the Palm network.
One of the first NFT collections available for purchase is the DC Bat Cowl Collection with 20,000 items, and holders will have an opportunity to choose storylines for future Batman editions.
Snoop Dogg to Open Bored Ape-Themed Dessert Restaurant
The rapper and NFT influencer is teaming up with LA-based Food Fighters Universe (FFU) to launch an NFT-themed dessert restaurant.
The restaurant, called Dr. Bombay’s Sweet Exploration, will use the rapper’s Bored Ape for the branding of the eatery that is expected to open in Los Angeles.
Dr. Bombay is the name that Snoop has given to his Bored Ape.
FFU launched earlier this year with the first restaurant using Bored Apes as inspiration for decoration and branding: The Bored & Hungry Restaurant.
‘Champ Medici’ and Snoop Dogg spoke about the partnership: “I saw what they did with Bored & Hungry in Long Beach, and I said, ‘We need to work with these guys.’”
These restaurants are not initiatives of Yuga Labs, who are creators of the Bored Apes Yacht Club. However, Yuga Labs grants the holders of the NFTs commercial rights to the images of the NFTs they own, making these business ventures possible.

SUNFLOWER LAND
PLAY-AND-OWN
By Kaf
The video game industry has been very lucrative in recent years and is expected to continue to grow in the future. Until recently, the only incentive for players was in-game progress. However, with the advent of NFTs and Web3, this is changing.
The most repeated word among lovers of video games and blockchain is Play-to-Earn (P2E). For example, it is possible in Axie Infinity to earn an engineer's salary with a couple of clicks or taps. Despite the unsustainable tokenomics model, Axie Infinity set a precedent for the industry.
Play-and-Own is Better
The P2E model is under pressure. Most of the rewards in games with this model are inflationary, which reduces prices and overall appeal. If everyone plays to earn, the game ends up being untenable. When the concept was first launched, many said it was a ponzi scheme while others said it would be their livelihood permanently. Neither of them were right. In this article, Philip La, creator of Axie Infinity, explains why the phrase “Play-to-Earn” should be dropped in favor of “Play-and-Own.”
Philip La argues that the “Play” in “Play-and-Own” is the important part. Maybe in a dystopian future people will play video games monotonously just to get their salaries. This isn’t play; this is work. Video games should be fun in a way that makes investing your time pleasurable. Before selling skins, League of Legends created a community of millions of people around a video game that is fun and engaging. Pokémon spent 20 years building a community around their games, and now sells cards, some of which run for thousands of euros, as part of its cultural value.
Developers and designers sell cards, skins, or other assets within video games in part due to the effort they made to create them. However, what must happen is that once you buy the card, skin, or other asset, you are the real owner. Web3 is revolutionizing digital property and this is why the Play-and-Own model is the future of video games.
Sunflower Land
Another game that has thousands of users and seeks to be sustainable through Play-to-Own is Sunflower Land.
Sunflower Land is a Play-and-Own blockchain farming simulation game on Polygon. It is similar to Farmland or Maple Story but on-chain. With just 1 MATIC you can mint your first farm, and start to manage it. You will have to plant carrots, potatoes, and many sunflowers, as well as take care of your pigs, chickens, and cows. As you collect, you will be able to create new assets that you can then sell in exchange for your SFL token.
The game is still in beta and surprisingly has more than 140k users, which makes it one of the most played blockchain games. In Web3, the community is of utmost importance, which is why it should be noted that Sunflower Land has approximately 200k members on Discord.
Crossover with Millions of Mars
Million On Mars is a 2D play-to-earn game focused on the development of land on the red planet. Players must work together to build a thriving settlement of over a million people powered by the economy of player-owned resources that they collect, farm, process, and create.
The collaboration between Million on Mars and Sunflower Land, built on the Wax and Polygon blockchains respectively, will mark one of the first Web3 experiences to enable consistent gameplay across two different networks. Blockchain interoperability will be paramount in the coming years.
Team
Sunflower Land is built by Thought Farm Pty Ltd, a company based in Sydney, formed by more than 40 open source developers and over 50 designers from all over the world. The team is passionate about building community-driven projects.
The aim of the team is to create the #1 Play-and-Own Crypto game. They want to tailor an accessible and friendly crypto experience where players can leave their mark on the MetaVerse and understand the true nature of crypto gaming: you own what you create and collect.
