DAOs Are Changing The World: How You Can Get Involved
We have said this before and will say it again: DAOs will revolutionise the world. DAOs already offer a multitude of opportunities for everyone involved, supporting coordination of effort on a global scale.
In September 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which address a range of humanitarian challenges. It is hoped that all countries will work together to meet SDG targets such as eliminating world hunger, supporting climate action, aiding work and economic growth, and bringing greater parity to gender equality.
While the SDGs are worthy, the same cannot be said for the measurement of our progress. The Sustainable Development Goals Index is designed to assess the progress of various UN Member States towards achieving the goals. Due to the dominance of social and infrastructure development indicators, and an over-simplified approach to the assessment of ecological impact, the index inaccurately favours developed nations.
For instance, countries such as Sweden and Finland have high scores, indicating that they are making progress towards all the SDG targets. In reality, the carbon footprints and resource consumption of these nations are far higher per capita than global averages.
In a global and connected world, progress towards SDGs remains frustratingly siloed. There is little international coordination taking place, and there is little incentive (apart from the obvious climate disaster) for implementing any of the necessary changes. While a tax-incentive system and the mobilisation of domestic funds for these goals seems plausible and desirable, none of it has materialised, especially in developing nations, which are already dealing with health and economic disparities.
A Solution
DAOs provide opportunities to mend the coordination problem. Web3 technology and culture has made it easier than ever to coordinate efforts and work towards shared goals. Within the DAO ecosystem, multiple DAOs have raised funds without the need for venture capital, using platforms such as Copper Launch combined with engaged and dedicated communities. These crypto-economic networks incentivize social good and promote egalitarian ideas such as the recent groundbreaking attempt to buy the American Constitution.
The permissionless, borderless, and distributed nature of DAOs can pierce through the obstacles that traditional humanitarian efforts face: lack of coordination, incentivization problems, and an absence of momentum. Some may argue that it’s quite early to say anything about the efficacy of DAOs at achieving sustainable development, but the upcoming examples may just make you a believer. A bet on DAOs is a bet on humanity. It really is possible to be paid to contribute to global efforts towards social justice, equity, and sustainability.
Mobilizing for Climate Change
According to the market, Amazon is the world’s most valuable company. But the Amazon rainforest has no market value until its vegetation is cleared for farming, and its trees are stripped of their greenery and extracted as logs. Klima Whitepaper.
Climate change is a large-scale problem that many individuals feel somewhat powerless to address. The exponential growth in carbon dioxide emissions (illustrated below) is startling. Many of us wonder when governments and corporations will take the necessary actions to reduce the impact of our economic activities on our precious system of life-support.
The Web3 revolution means individuals can choose to fight climate change by participating in tokenized carbon offset initiatives set up by KlimaDAO, Regen Network, Toucan Protocol, and many others. KlimaDAO seeks to bridge the gap between what is being valued by the markets and what is actually valuable to us as humans. Having created a carbon market tied to the off-chain market, they have backed each token with at least 1 tonne of tokenized verified carbon offsets locked in their treasury.
The Regen Network is a protocol based on the Regen Ledger, which seeks to incentivize sustainable crop-management techniques. While present economic models incentivize landholders to exploit their resources, the Regen Network promotes and rewards environmentally responsible land use.
Property Rights
SDG 11 aims to, “make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable”. One particular target being is to, “ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums”.
There are DAOs that make it easier to purchase real estate, lease it, and even meet up with fellow contributors in real life. These plans are achieved by the likes of CityDAO, CabinDAO, and DtravelDAO. While CityDAO allows people to come together from any corner of the world and purchase off-chain real estate, CabinDAO allows people to meet online but gather together off-chain to recharge themselves. Another, DTravelDAO, enables the host and paying guest to communicate better by ensuring greater security and giving more control to token holders regarding housing developments.
Gender Gap
Gender inequality is an abstract problem that requires abstract solutions. Thankfully, the amazing people at Komorebi Collective are doing just that. The program is dedicated to female and non-binary founders who are leveraging crypto for their specific projects. Their mission is to ensure that the crypto-sphere remains as diverse as possible and people coming from minority backgrounds get the push they need to excel. On the other hand, we have Meta Gamma Delta that focuses on gender equality and provides a safe space to the women of Web3 for sharing ideas and exploring. Conceived at EthDenver 2020, the Meta Gamma Delta society also provides mentorship and grants to women who wish to work on awesome projects.
Legal System
With the discussions of regulation going around, it is important to protect yourself from liability whenever you’re starting a DAO or integrating your business with Web3. DAOs such as OpenLaw and LexDAO are helping everyone stay on the right side of the law. While LexDAO provides consultations and gives legal advice, OpenLaw has tools to change legal contracts into smart contracts, making them compatible with Ethereum.
Education System
It is important for newcomers to educate themselves about best practices. While alluring, Web3 can be dangerous. It is also important to stay up-to-date with the latest developments, seeking out that alpha!
Education is continuous and some DAOs, or rather some guilds within DAOs, do that best. The Education Guild at BanklessDAO merits a mention. Multiple projects have sprung up from the ideas of Education Guild members, and a revamped workshop program is just around the corner. These workshops, ranging from the usage of Discord to the issuance of a digital wallet, are vital for newcomers.
Conclusion
It isn’t necessary to cover each SDG highlighted by the UN to indicate how well DAOs are equipped and positioned to strive towards these goals. Off-chain problems can have on-chain solutions. The momentum and initiative often shunned by the traditionalists in legacy corporations end up driving DAOs. When you’re not afraid of taking risks, anything is possible.

💡 Proposals in Discussion
💸 Global Tax Consultancy Proposal + TAXpunk NFT
The Legal Guild would like to prepare a global tax guide (GTG) that provides a general introduction to virtual currency-related income tax laws for major jurisdictions. Access to the GTG will be granted by minting a BanklessDAO TaxPunk NFT. Anybody will be able to mint the NFT and access the tax guide for fee. The guide will be used to kick off Legal Guild’s tax consultancy for individuals, corporates, and other DAOs.
🕵🏼 Operations Guild Season 3 Budget Proposal
Frogmonkee prepared the Operations Guild’s proposal for Season 3. The proposal defines the scope of responsibilities, the general plan for Season 3, and of course how the budget will be spent. Go read it!

🏦 Season 3 - Grants Committee Submissions
According to the seasonal spec, there will be 4 seats up for election for the Season 3 Grants Committee. It consists of 7 committee members who form the multi-sig. The committee is responsible and accountable for managing the grants system, reviewing grant applications, and managing the grants treasury, with the help of other guilds as needed. If you want to apply, follow the link and post your resume.
➕ Decentralization of Notion Permissions Proposal
There will be changes to the permission levels for our Notion pages. People will no longer be able to edit any page. If you notice that you cannot edit a certain page, contact your guild and request editing access.
This proposed model will decentralize Notion permissions by re-ordering the underlying page structure, groups, and permissions. Each guild/project will have the ability and responsibility to set permissions and visibility for their Notion pages.
There will also be a team within the Operations Guild that will act as Notion administrators for DAO-wide pages.
