A BanklessDAO Guide for New Members | BanklessDAO Weekly Rollup
Catch Up With What Happened This Week in BanklessDAO
Dear Bankless Nation 🏴,
It’s hard to believe, but Wednesday next week is the halfway mark for Season 5! Everyone has had their heads down, hard at work, and it shows. This week our website project team shipped a fresh new design, our sub-DAO Fight Club has opened up their long-awaited public mint for the Black Glove NFT, and Bankless Africa is growing so relentlessly fast that a mid-season proposal for additional funds is now up for consideration.
Round 15 of Gitcoin Grants kicked off this week — siddhearta will have the story of BanklessDAO’s participation in next week’s editorial — but for now please contribute to Bankless Academy and Crypto Sapiens if you can. Thanks to the power of quadratic funding, the number of donations are more important than the total amount, so donate 1 DAI today! Round 15 is open until September 22, with over 2,720 grants to support.
Funding public goods is fun (add to cart!), but rewarding your Web3 fam feels just as good. The clock has started ticking for you to allocate your GIVE in this month’s Coordinape round. Don’t miss the deadline of 15:00 UTC on September 14 — and leave that note of appreciation!
For this week’s editorial, first-time newsletter authors Leah_par and vickyone have written a guide for our new contributors. Whether you’re fresh into our Discord or a venerable veteran, we hope you’ll learn something new about the DAO.
On a final note, you may have noticed the Saturday ship. This is the new normal, so please look for the Rollup in your inbox on Saturdays from now on.

🗓 Weekly Recap
Community Highlights
🌌 BanklessDAO Website and Supercluster Labs
After months of work from the website team, the overhaul of BanklessDAO’s web presence is live! With a fresh design and new content, the site offers a wealth of information about the DAO’s activities and how to get involved.
One of the key features on the original implementation wish list — a truly Web3 decentralized website front end — was scrapped along the way due to the complexity associated with integrating the available technology. Instead, the team chose to ship the website now, and took an idea for a possible solution to the HackFS hackathon, where they won second place. They’ve now formed Supercluster Labs to look specifically at decentralized web solutions, and will continue to improve the website in short development cycles.
Keep an eye out for the opportunity to request a page be developed specifically for a guild or project.
🥊 Fight Club Public Mint
It’s time; the Fight Club public mint has arrived! If you were on the allow-list for the Black Glove NFT and missed the deadline, you now have until 12 noon EDT on September 11 to save 70 MATIC. After that, the mint will open to the general public at cost of 820 MATIC. With either the Red or Black Gloves you will gain access to the full Fight Club Discord, and be able to participate in meetings, investment calls, and the education program.

🗄️ How To Gnosis Session
Gnosis Safe is a smart contract wallet running on Ethereum which requires a minimum number of pre-designated signatories to approve a transaction before it can proceed. For example, if you have three main stakeholders in your business, you are able to set up the wallet to require approval from all three people before the transaction is executed.
Join Ernest_of_Gaia for a session on how to use Gnosis Safe, to be held in the #watercooler channel on Tuesday, September 13 at 13:00 UTC. RSVP to this Sesh event.
🐬 Metropolis Pods Demo
DAOlationships is hosting a demo on Wednesday, September 14 at 18:30 UTC featuring Metropolis, formerly known as Orca Protocol. Metropolis representatives will talk about “pods” — which enable a “lightweight permissions layer around a Gnosis Safe multi-sig wallet” that extends its features in multiple ways. Pods can simplify signer management and aggregate multiple safes into one interface, with more features to come. Make sure to catch both this demo and the How to Gnosis session to become a Gnosis expert. RSVP to this Sesh event.
🥷🏽 Ready to Become a Notion Ninja?
The BanklessDAO Notion Ninja Learn2Earn Course is a three-stage educational course consisting of YouTube videos and quizzes. You will learn best practices for the way BanklessDAO uses Notion — the source of truth for the DAO’s operational knowledge. This course covers how to modify, manage, and create pages and databases in Notion. On completion of each stage, the student can earn a very cool 2D Bankless Ninja NFT, each with a new belt color.
If you have taken the White Belt Course and are ready for the Orange Belt Course, feel free to start now. This time you will find your PFP as unlockable content within the NFT. It’s not too late to sign up for the White Belt if you’ve missed the Ninja fun to date.

A BanklessDAO Guide for New Members
Authors: Leah_par and vickyone
Hey New-bee!
Glad you could make it to BanklessDAO (bDAO), where hundreds of Web3 enthusiasts work together to further our mission, which is to “create user-friendly onramps for people to discover decentralized financial technologies through education, media, and culture”.
Onboarding might appear to be a simple process, but sometimes it can be overwhelming. To reduce some of the stress, we made this guide. The aim is to streamline the onboarding process and make navigating the ‘streets’ of bDAO much easier. We will introduce you to the BanklessDAO toolkit and share some bDAO lingo (’cause we don't want you looking clueless😅). Thanks for joining us!!
BanklessDAO Toolkit
BanklessDAO Discord
At this point, you have a Discord handle, and have joined bDAO’s Discord via this invite link. As a first step, it is crucial that you have the Discord roles of "First Quest Welcome" and "First Quest Complete" to access bDAO channels. Let’s start by showing you how to get these.
Navigate to the #verification channel under First Quest.
There, you take the CAPTCHA test and will be redirected to your Direct Messages (DMs).
In your DMs, the First Quest bot interacts with you using gamification. It will provide you with some information to read, and to progress you must react by selecting an emoji. At the end of your chat with the First Quest bot, you should be allocated the ‘First Quest Welcome' and ‘First Quest Complete' role tags.
Next, proceed to the #dao-start-here channel under Welcome, and read the essentials for getting started in BanklessDAO. Carefully read and follow all instructions, as this will create a better experience.
Having completed First Quest and read through #dao-start-here, your next step is to gain access to bDAO channels. To do this you need a Guest Pass, so proceed to the #get-involved channel. Introduce yourself, provide a little background for your interest in the DAO, and request a Guest Pass.
Note: If you already have 35,000 BANK in your wallet, you can skip this step and move to the section about #role-select.
Following your introduction in the #get-involved channel, wait for a Level 2 contributor to provide you with a Guest Pass. It doesn’t usually take very long! Now head to the #role-select channel under General.
The #role-select channel is where you can see all the DAO’s guilds and projects. Select a guild or project that catches your interest. Clicking the reaction emoji unlocks additional channels within that guild or project and ensures you will receive notifications. You can select as many guilds and projects as you want, or deselect whenever you need to. You can also select the ‘firehose’ role to see and receive notifications for ALL channels in the BanklessDAO server (although this is not recommended for new starters).
Now that you've selected a guild and/or project, head to the guild and/or project #general channel and make a brief introduction of yourself to start contributing. Most groups have a talent coordinator or person in a similar role to welcome new members and orient them to activities.
Now we will continue with some of the technology tools you’ll need to become familiar with as you settle in.
Crypto Wallets
A crypto wallet is a must-have tool to get the most out of your BanklessDAO experience. A wallet enables you to manage bDAO's governance token, BANK. The most popular non-custodial wallet is MetaMask, but you should also give Tally Ho’s community-owned Web3 wallet a try. Depending on the wallet, it can be installed as an extension on your browser, or downloaded as an app on your phone. Please be sure to check out the Bankless Academy lesson on the best practices for wallet security.
Note: Although bDAO Coordinape payments are made on the Ethereum chain, some guilds prefer the Polygon network. You can read on how to add Polygon to your MetaMask here.
The BanklessDAO Wiki
The BanklessDAO Wiki is a fantastic resource for your journey with BanklessDAO. Built using Notion, and usually referred to as such, the wiki is our interactive knowledge center. Begin by reading the materials under Start Here and DAO Resources.
Discord Bots
The following bots help to automate and coordinate key functions for the DAO:
Collab.Land
One of our cultures at bDAO is rewarding folks for their contributions by tipping them BANK. Collab.Land automates these actions. Technically, it serves as a connection between your wallet and Discord. To understand how the bot is used, visit the Notion page titled: [Discord] How To Use the Collab.Land Tip Bot. You can also access this link via a pinned post in the #hype-and-recognition channel — click on the pin up the top to see it.
Sesh
Sesh bot is used to schedule events (meetings). Members' can confirm participation and set reminders for events in their DMs with Sesh. This bot is also used to set up voting polls.
Mad Hatter
Mad Hatter was designed and developed to help improve operations within bDAO, including delivery of the Coordinape participation form, informing people when a member is away, and assignment / expiration of a Guest Pass.
Wick
Sometimes links can be very dangerous, so there's a need to manage them within the community. The Wick bot keeps a database of malicious links and regulates their use. It also prevents the posting of links by non-Guest Pass holders and prevents duplicate posting of links.
Coordinape
Coordinape is a wallet-connected app that facilitates reward and recognition for the effort and contributions we make in the DAO. At the end of each season, or in some cases, within the season, guilds and projects allocate GIVE tokens to members, which they can distribute as they choose to others. BANK is then allocated to contributors based upon the GIVE tokens received.
Pay attention to information in the #announcements channel, so you don’t miss out on Coordinape sign-up and allocation periods (known as epochs).
Discourse Forum
While we work and play in bDAO, there is also room for anyone to come up with an initiative to further bDAO’s mission. The Forum is the platform where these ideas and proposals are presented, allowing the community to comment and vote on whether to fund the initiative.
Snapshot
As a bDAO contributor, it is imperative that you contribute to DAO governance as well as projects or workgroups.
Snapshot is a wallet-connected app used for DAO-wide voting. Everyone who has BANK is eligible to participate in DAO governance. One token equals one vote. This means the more the BANK held, the greater the voting power. Snapshot enables everyone in bDAO to have a say in its direction, helping to keep decision making decentralized.
POAP
The Proof of Attendance Protocol (POAP) is a type of non-fungible token that provides proof that you attended an event or were rewarded for some type of participation.
Not Sure Where You Fit In?
Not to worry! New joiners can contribute by taking meeting notes, attending meetings, giving meaningful advice, and making suggestions or even starting your own project. You can join the monthly new joiners' session to learn more.
At this point, it's just about showing up and doing what you are here to do — make friends and connections, and do good work. Or as we call it: play.
Learning the Lingo
If you've been in the community for a while now, you must have noticed people writing the words 'gm' 'ser' 'WAGMI' in the channels. Check out this guide to get up to date on Web3 lingo, including these three and so many more!!
🚀 LFG!
Equipped with a wallet, Discord access, and knowledge, you are now ready to contribute to our mission of helping the world go bankless. And no matter what, #justDAOit.
🎣 Phishing School
Authors: d0wnlore and the InfoSec Team
Protecting Your Assets With a Shared Responsibility Model
We like to repeat the concept of “self-custody” in crypto because of the criticality of it. But at the same time we likely don’t exercise this concept enough when using services and technologies from the Web2 or even Web1 era. Being able to recover accounts through customer service or finding refuge in the assurances and insurances in TradFi can lead to a false sense of security about our assets that are not fully protected.
Did you know that if you use an insecure PIN code with your debit or bank card, such as the MMYY of your birthday, you may not be fully protected by deposit insurance should you fall for a phishing scam, depending on the bank or jurisdiction?
To fully protect our assets, whether it’s a domain name or our crypto wallets, we should adopt a shared responsibility model to understand and take action on what aspects of assets we need to proactively protect. This way you cover the gaps and avoid possible security mishaps like in the bad PIN code scenario.
What Is Shared Responsibility?
Cloud service providers such as AWS have a concept of the shared responsibility model, which defines what parts of the cloud service are under AWS’ responsibility to maintain and protect, and what is your responsibility as the steward of the specific parts of the cloud service that you’re utilizing.
While many people working with cloud services now fully understand what is their responsibility and what isn’t, this concept took many years for people to grasp as people took the meme “the cloud is just someone else’s computer” too literally. We are still in this nascent period of shared responsibility in Web3. We either go all-in on self-custody when we have not properly educated ourselves on the burdens we carry through that, or we do not utilize more centralized services that can reduce the headache of securely storing our assets.
What Shared Responsibility Looks Like
If you are purchasing a DNS domain name, it’s your responsibility to research and choose a domain name provider that does not have a recent track record of having major security issues or other shady behavior (such as being tricked into transferring domain names to unauthorized people). You should also look into what privacy features your domain name provider has, so you don’t disclose your personally identifiable information (PII) through your domain name. Do not rely on the service provider to make all possible security and privacy controls available clear to you; you may have to look for these controls yourself.
If you are a front-end developer that’s using third party scripts, it’s your responsibility to use the security controls available to you to mitigate issues such as supply chain attacks. This can be done by hosting the scripts yourself or linking them to a reputable CDN and using browser security features to reduce likelihood of issues (linking to specific script versions and subresource integrity). If you do not use specific versions of scripts you are relying on CDNs to always provide you the latest and secure version of a script, which will not always be the case.
If you are a user, it’s your responsibility to perform actions through your crypto wallet with care. You should configure your wallet so you can distinguish it from a fake/phishing attempt and perform enough due diligence before each action so you do not sign or approve malicious contract methods. Do not rely on every website that prompts your wallet to open to be legitimate or every address or method you see in your wallet to be legitimate.
If you have a Discord, Twitter, Telegram, etc. account it’s your responsibility to use all security controls available to you to prevent your account from being taken over. This includes being proactive about social engineering attacks, using two-factor authentication (2FA), not re-using passwords across services and keeping the devices that you access these services through secure as well. Do not rely on these services to protect your account if you do not go far enough to make sure you are harnessing things like 2FA and secure passwords.
🏛 Governance
Proposals in Discussion
👨👩👧👧 DoinGud Community Membership
DoinGud, the team behind EthBarcelona, is an NFT marketplace that operates on Polygon. They offer a unique function of routing a certain percentage of sales towards a cause of the NFT creator’s choice. In launching their DAO, they have invited BanklessDAO to join them as a community partner. They are looking for value-aligned communities to build, educate, and advance the Web3 public goods movement. As a community member of the DoinGud DAO, we would be joining Developer DAO, Livepeer, Gitcoin, BrightID, Kleros, Proof-of-Humanity, Kernel, Giveth, The DAOist, and more. Check out the updated version of the proposal here.
⁉️ Bringing BanklessDAO AMAs to the Next Level
WildFireDAO has proposed to partner with BanklessDAO to deliver weekly AMAs with high-profile projects such as ENS, Gitcoin, Aave, and many more. The first season of funding is intended as a trial run and sponsorships would not be pursued until an audience has been built, but in future seasons a share of sponsor revenue would be returned to bDAO in exchange for each seasonal grant.
🧰 BanklessDAO Tally Pro and Password Management
The Notion Administration team, part of the Operations Guild, regularly fields requests from DAO members. Two of the most frequent requests are integrating Tally forms with Notion and a system for shared team passwords. During the course of S4, Notion Admins developed and tested solutions for both of these problems and are requesting 66,656 BANK to make them available to BanklessDAO projects and guilds.
🏦 veBANK — Value Escrow Bank — DRAFT 1
Currently the only incentive to hold BANK long term is for the purpose of attaining a Level 1 membership and for voting rights on Snapshot proposals, although participation in DeFI and holding the token for speculation are other motivations. In order to help promote long-term DAO alignment, this proposal suggests a pilot program of time-locking BANK, initially for 6 months, in exchange for veBANK. Holders of veBANK who have locked BANK in a smart contract would be rewarded through community opportunities, role selection, and many more possibilities.
🌍 Bankless Africa Mid-Season Update and Supplementary Budget
Bankless Africa’s growth has been next level and their reach across the continent continues to expand. This has brought to the forefront of their attention a unique problem, language. Africa has between one to two thousand languages among its population of 75 million. Pidgin Parlour is the proposed solution to opening up their content to as much of the population as possible. Without a written standard, the African Pidgin language must be communicated using an audio-visual format, which is what this proposal aims to support, to bring Bankless content and crypto knowledge to millions of Africans.

I am feeling a bit stupid here, I failed the first quest. Haha
I clicked on the link to join the BanklessDAO discord, I then go to #verify-here channel. I get Vick's message asking me to press Verify, but when I press it, I have the error "This interaction failed". The same happens when I click the Help button.
This happens on my windows client, andriod app, and web browser discord.
Can someone please help?
